Endocrine System

What is the endocrine system?

The endocrine system is made up of glands that produce hormones to regulate metabolism, growth and development. The major endocrine glands include the pineal gland, pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, testis, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, and adrenal glands. Hormone is important to the human body, it should be taken care all the time.

The secretion of hormones can be affected by diseases, infection, stress, and many other factors. Corticosteroids are a special hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. When they are overproduced, they bring negative impact to the body’s immune system.

Like other systems in the human body, the endocrine system is protected by immune cells such as macrophages. It also links the nervous system and the immune system to communicate each other.

Consequences of endocrine system disorders

Disorders of the endocrine system can lead to diseases such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hyperthyroidism (high levels of hormones secreted by the thyroid gland in the blood), and hypothyroidism.
