What is Nutritional Immunology?

Nutritional Immunology is a science that studies the link between nutrition and human immune system which founded by Dr JauFei Chen, an American Chinese scientist.

Dr Chen’s research found that eating healthy food can strengthen the body’s immune system.

A proper and balance nutrition can enhance the function of our immune system and able to defend against diseases. Nutritional Immunology emphasis on consuming natural plant foods for proper nutrition and does not promote any chemically refined foods.

This science goes beyond basic survival nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins. but to study : antioxidants, phytochemicals, polysaccharides, and other nutrients that can improve immunity. Nutritional Immunology advocates prevention is better than cure because it may be too late to cure when the disease was diagnosed. Therefore, it is better to provide proper nutrition to our immune system in daily life to prevent diseases.

Does immune disorder cause major of the diseases?

Yes, most diseases are caused by immune system disorder.

When our immune system is stimulated or agitated, our body will produce excessive of IgE antibodies which can cause allergies such as skin sensitivity and hay fever. People might develop cancer or any infectious diseases such as SARS, due to low body immune system. Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and other chronic diseases are due to overactive immune system. The body attacks and damages its own tissues.

What is wholesome foods?

Wholesome foods are natural food that have not undergone any chemical processing or refining at all.

Is Natural means Healthy?

Not all natural things mean healthy. For example, herbs are divided into edible herbs and medicinal herbs. Medicinal herbs cause side effects, while edible herbs are safe.

Salicylic acid is a compound that isolated from the white willow herb which can be used to make aspirin. Ephedra domain is a compound isolated from the herb ephedra which can cause heamorrhage if using excessively.  Coca salt and tobacco are another example of natural herbs with side effects. Experts also believe that although some herbs are natural, taking them with certain drugs can have the opposite effect.

Can calcium reduce the risk of cancer?

The American Cancer Society reports that high-calcium food may reduce the chance of developing colorectal cancer and the formation of colorectal adenoma. To achieve an optimal calcium absorption, it recommends people consume wholesome food such as leafy vegetables, and green foods, rather than relying on calcium tablets.

The recommended calcium intake is 1000 mg per day for adult aged 19-50 years old and 1200 mg per day for those over 50 years old.

What is the daily intake of plant food & meat?

Experts recommended a daily intake of 5-9 or 400 grams of different types of fruits and vegetables and not more than 80-90 grams of meat. World Health Organisation research shown that the more of fruits and vegetables consumed as part of our daily diet can help to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, strokes and certain type of diseases.

Can 5 apples a day to achieve the same effect?

Each food contains different antioxidants, phytochemicals and polysaccharides. Consuming 5 portion of same type of fruits or vegetables does not able to meet our nutritional needs.

Should we stop eating MEAT?

Recommended daily intake of meat for maintaining our health is not more than 80 to 90 grams. Studies have shown that eating too much red meat is bad for your health.

Many experts suggested that eating fish is more beneficial to human health than eating red meat.

Why Nutrition Immunology does not support animal food?

Animal foods stimulate the human body to secrete prostaglandin II, which inhibits immune function and increase the risk of cancer.

Therefore, nutritional immunology only promotes plant foods which increase immunity.

What kind of nutrients can be found in animal foods but not in plant foods?

Nutrition that needed to maintain body immune system and to enhance the immune function can only be found in plant source food.

Does cancer or hear diseases associated with high salt diet ?

American Cancer Society warns the public not to consume too much salted food in order to avoid the risk of cancer. Further, it has been reported that high salt intake increases blood pressure, which can lead to stroke, heart attack and other woes. Recommended salt intake should no more than 3000 milligrams ( mg ) or one and half teaspoon a day.

The more intake of phytonutrients, the health you are ?

Yes definitely. Phytonutrients found in different type of plant food provide different type of benefit. Consuming variety of Phytonutrient rich foods, will benefit more to human body.

Should stop eating cured meat?

According to World Health Organisation report, cured meat and red meat increase the chance of developing colorectal cancer due to nitrites. Nitrites have been used to preserve the colour of meat and also inhibit the growth of bacteria. Nitrites will breakdown into nitrosamines in stomach which is cancerous to our body, thus increase the risk of stomach cancer.  Consuming more vegetable rich in Vitamin C and phytonutrients can block the formation of nitrosamines in stomach. Marinated meat with salt or some kind of acid will stimulated the growth of cancer cells. Studies have shown that people who have been diagnosed with stomach cancer, nasal and paranasal sinus cancers are positively associated with the consumption of salted meat, pickled and preserved vegetables.

Is it harmful to consume cooked meat and boiled milk ?

It is important to cook all the meat and milk properly to kill all the bacteria that can cause food poisoning.  However, some studies suggest that high temperature cooking, such as frying, roasting and baking will cause some chemical reaction which increase the risk of cancer. Some experts believe that the process of sterilizing milk with high temperatures can remove microorganism but also destroy the natural enzymes which are supposed to break down into proteins. In animal testing, it causes some chronic diseases same as in human, and even lead to death.

What is Phytochemical?

More and more research shows that consuming high volume of wholesome food can effectively reduce the risk of cancer because it contains a natural chemical known as  phytonutrients which can help protect plants from germs, fungi, bugs, and environmental toxins. This means phytonutrients tackle harmful free radicals that damage human tissues and block the development of cancerous cells. This supported by Dr Paul Talalay of the Johns Hopkins Institute of Medicine, he says vegetables and fruits are rich in phytonutrients which prevent human from getting cancer even when excessively exposed to tumor causing chemicals. Eating bacon may cause carcinogens in stomach, but eating whole food rich in phytonutrients can prevent the formation of carcinogens and reduce the risk of cancer. Besides, animal hormones that found in meat can cause breast cancer and prostate cancer. However phytonutrients can also prevent the cancer causing hormones form attaching to normal cells.

Can phytonutrients be found in meat foods?

No, phytonutrients only can be found in plant sourced food.

What is a Polysaccharide?

Polysaccharides are carbohydrate structure made of many simple sugars called monosaccharides.

Mushrooms are well known rich in polysaccharides which bring benefit to human immune system.

Where are polysaccharides found?

Polysaccharides can be found in both animals and plants food, but polysaccharides in plants food, such as mushrooms, are relatively pure and bring no side effects.

What is the function of polysaccharides?

Studies shown that polysaccharides in certain mushrooms can activate immune cells and inhibit tumor growth. Polysaccharide boost immune system to produce natural killer cells, interferon and interleukins to kill cancer cells in order to maintain balanced immune health. Today, polysaccharide-rich mushrooms are also widely used in antiviral.

The more polysaccharides intake, the more healthy you are ?

No, dosage control is important. No, dose control is important. Only a correct dose of intake can effectively boost the immune system, promoting the body to fight against the cancer cell.

What is antioxidant?

Daily activities like breathing, eating will produce free radicals. Free radical causes ageing and various diseases. Antioxidants can help to reduce the damage caused by free radicals. Obtain antioxidants through the consumption of wholesome foods can prevent ageing of human organs and keep the immune system in best condition to prevent diseases.

Can fish oil supplements prevent cancer?

As of today, study only found that natural fish contains Omega 3 fatty acid that are beneficial to human. But, there is no significant proven that fish oil supplements are beneficial to human health.

Does high intake of plant based nutrition stimulate the growth of cancer cells ?

No, it won’t. Consuming plant food will only strengthen immune system. Healthy immune system can effectively control the growth of tumours and prevent infections in human body. In fact, hunger will speed up the growing of bacteria and tumours. As the immune system does not deliver the desired effects, therefore unable to prevent gene mutation and prevent invaders attack our body.

What is the ideal intake of water or fluid?

American Cancer Society announced that drinking a lot of water might lower a risk of bladder cancer. Water dilute the concentration of carcinogens & avoid carcinogens.

The health authorities commonly recommend 8 glasses of water a day, however, American Journal of Physiology points out that each person needs different amounts of water. Excessive intake of water, can lead to water intoxication in which kidneys are not able to excrete excessive fluid.

Can B-carotene reduce cancer risk?

Beta-carotene is a type of anti-oxidant that can be converted into vitamin A before it can be utilized by the body. Beta-carotene can be found primarily in plant based food which is rich in phytonutrients. Therefore, it was commonly known by the public that eating large amounts of B-carotene pills can reduce the risk of cancer.

n the past, scientists have done three major clinical trials i.e. given high dose of synthetic B-carotene pills to human to prevent lung and other cancers. Two of the clinical research shows that beta-carotene supplementation may increase the risk of lung cancer among smokers. Whereas, the 3rd research show no harm and no benefit.

As a conclusion, high dose of B-carotene may not beneficial, in fact it is harmful to the body especially to the smokers.

Can drinking tea reduce cancer risk?

As of today, there is no study can prove that tea can reduce the risk of cancer. Some researchers believe that tea can prevent cancer because of the antioxidants found in tea leave.

Laboratory Animal Research shows certain teas (including green tea) do reduce the risk of cancer. However, result from a major clinical trials was inconsistent. Caffeine found in tea leave impairs resection during DNA break repair. Oolong tea, jasmine tea, black tea and green tea are all made from tea leaves and contain caffeine. The caffeine content in dry tea leave is as high as 3.5%, compared to coffee beans of 2.2%. Studies has shown heart diseases, insomnia, low fertility and bladder cancers are associated with large amount of caffeine intake.

How antioxidants, phytonutrients and polysaccharides work together to prevent cancer?

Different nutrients deliver cancer preventive effects at different stages of cancer formation. Cancer can be cause by many reasons. It can be caused by free radicals. In this case, body needs antioxidants to stop the free radical from damaging cell.

Cancer can also be caused by animal hormones, environment pollution, and suppression of immune function. Hence, the body needs phytonutrients to inhibit the growth of the tumours and reduce the risk of cancer.

Explosion to carcinogenic chemicals, radiation and viral infections is another reason of cancer formation. Polysaccharides prevent the formation of cancer, destroy cancer cells and viruses by increasing the production of interleukins and interferons, as well as enhancing cellular immunity.

Will the prevention be too late for those with inherited cancer genes?

Cancer is caused by mutations of DNA within cells. DNA mutation can be occur after birth or inherited. Nutrition cannot change genetics but with a healthy diet, human body can prevent certain cancer cause by inherited gene. Further, diseases can be controlled or symptoms of disease can be alleviated through a healthy lifestyle. The American Cancer society recommends certain nutrients to protect cells from mutation or damage. Exercise and weight control can delay or prevent the development of cancer cells. Lots of research are still in progress to find other ways to prevent cancers.

How to live a long, healthy life by practising with the nutritional immunology ?

Nutritional immunology emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, and stress management.
